How to use Kiara Advani’s glow-enhancing ingredient, besan, in your DIY skincare recipes

Kiara Advani’s skincare routine is highly sought after among her fans, and it comes as little surprise why. Whether hopping on a flight early in the AM or stepping on the red carpet in her signature sequined numbers, her minimalistic approach to makeup is usually accompanied by a flawless base. Make no mistake though, the Jugg Jugg Jeeyo star doesn’t owe her blemish-free appearance to endless hours in a salon chair—in an interview, she credited besan, or gram flour, as her go-to DIY ingredient.Passed down from mother to daughter, the skincare savior assumes the form of a nourishing scrub that she relies on for a monthly brightening treatment. “My mom makes this paste with fresh cream and besan which works as a scrub and she insists I follow this home treatment once a month,” she said. Loaded with antioxidant properties, besan makes for a handy physical exfoliant for sloughing away dead skin cell build-up and revealing your skin’s natural glow. Make yours by mixing one teaspoon of gram flour and aloe vera into a smooth paste and apply thrice a week for visible results.A besan and multani mitti face pack for oily skinIf the humidity of the monsoon has sent your skin’s oiliness into overdrive, these two ingredients can together help regulate sebum production. After mixing one teaspoon each of the dry powders, add in a few drops of rosewater until you achieve a smooth consistency and treat yourself to a luxurious, brightening facial from within your home.A besan and oats body scrub for exfoliationDoes your skin feel like it has lost its lustre? 17 Easy Hairstyles When You Just Can’t Even

17 Easy Hairstyles When You Just Can’t Even

There are days when we just can’t even. It’s a feeling that’s extremely common on Mondays or after a late night out. And it’s a mood some experience on a regular basis (no judgment). Feeling like a sloth isn’t troublesome when it’s the weekend and we can spend the day in our PJs binge-watching box sets. But it’s a problem when we have work, class or a formal function where we need to look presentable. When just getting out of bed feels like a monumental effort, we aren’t going to bother with hair tools and 15-step hairstyles. We want effortless hairstyles. If they can disguise unwashed hair, even better. Most of us have a default hairstyle for lazy days, but it’s good to have more than one in your repertoire. The beauty of these easy hairstyles is that there’s no need to consult YouTube tutorials to create them. Just brush, twist and fasten accordingly, then get out the door. In addition to requiring next-to-no effort or time, they’re polished enough for a variety of occasions. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself working them into your routine even when you’re in a more ambitious mood.Scroll down to see 17 effortless hairstyles for when you can’t be bothered.Images: Imaxtree Rocking curly locks? Twist them up into a structured top knot. Let a couple coils hang down for a more effortless vibe. Half updos are once again in style. Middle part your hair, then pull back both sides of your locks and join them in the back. The trick is to leave a few strands in front to frame your face. If you’re an expert at braiding your hair, this low ponytail should be a piece of cake. Only weave a small section just below your neck, then let the rest of the ponytail hang free. Gather your strands into a low ponytail, but forgo pulling them through the elastic that last time. It’s like having a bun AND a ponytail. Take the polish out of a classic ballerina bun by pulling a couple of strands loose. Nothing sets off middle-parted hair like a bold hair pin. Flaunt it only on one side or balance things out with a matching set. No need to get out the hair tools. Embrace your hair’s texture and length by wrapping a headband around your head so it sits just behind the hairline and the tail is behind one ear. If you don’t have one with a tail, recreate the look with a long piece of ribbon. Now is not the time to attempt a perfect swirled bun. Part locks down the center and gather them at the nape of your neck with an elastic. Instead of pulling your hair all the way through wrap the elastic around strands to form a knotted bun. Quit trying to shellac every hair in place. Focus on tying the bulk of your hair back, leaving a few strands loose on one side of your face. It’s OK if more pieces come out throughout the day. Experimenting with parts can create a multitude of chic hairstyles. Try a sharp side part with lengths gathered at the back of your head. Pro tip: A stroke of bold eyeliner across lower lash lines will wake up your face after a long night. The humble bobby pin can create an elegant look by keeping layers where they should be. For visual interest, stack a couple of bobby pins together. Bring retro vibes without spending ages in curlers. Part locks down the center, then pin the front sections of hair on either side of the part to the back of the head. If lengths aren’t cooperating, tuck them into your shirt collar.  No energy to blowdry? No problem. Quickly towel dry hair so there are no drips, then scoop strands back into a low bun. Leave the ends untucked so they angle down toward the back. Then you’re ready to go out the door. The best hairstyles flatter your face. So try focusing on the front layers rather than the ends. One of the simplest styles is a deep side part with long layers swept across your face. If your roots are greasy, give them a refresh with dry shampoo to prevent a plastered effect. No matter how lethargic you’re feeling, all it takes is one simple step to push a headband back over your hairline. Showcase your hair’s natural texture by leaving it down. Add a little something to the look by parting strands on the side, then take a small section from one area and pin it across to the other. It’s easier to wash and go with short strands, but cropped locks still need attention. One low-maintenance option is to gel strands back slightly over one side of your head. It creates movement, shows off your face shape and only takes minutes.

How Your Towel Is Sabotaging Your Skin

How Your Towel Is Sabotaging Your Skin

Our skin care routines change with the seasons, when skin conditions pop up (hello, face mask-induced acne) or whenever there’s an exciting new Korean beauty launch. One thing that remains constant is that we always use a towel after cleansing. But what if that towel turned out to be bad for our skin?Washcloths are often criticized by skin care experts because they capture dirt and bacteria that can be transferred to skin. Now some beauty gurus are doing away with towels in the name of better skin.As with the majority of beauty trends these days, the no-towel method comes from Korea where it’s common practice for women not to towel-dry their faces. Christine Chang, co-founder of Korean beauty site Glow Recipe, explains that it was one of her mother’s core beauty philosophies.“I still remember her standing at the sink, her face freshly wet from a double cleanse. She would use her fingertips to pat and wick the moisture away until her skin was left slightly damp. She would then move on to her skin care routine, carefully and gently patting in each step.”The big benefit of ditching your towel is that it’s kinder to skin. The rubbing, pulling and friction can irritate freshly cleansed faces. Jessica Jeong, marketing and PR manager for Missha, points out that towels, like almost every other surface we come in contact with, can collect bacteria, which can be redistributed to skin when patting it dry. This can lead to breakouts and irritation. Even towels we think are clean may not be. Chang cautions that a towel hanging within a 6- to 20-foot radius of a toilet could get bacteria transferred to it. Ew.Rachel Winard from Soapwalla, Jeong and Chang all recommend forgoing towels. Instead of letting your face drip dry, they suggest using your hands to “dry” your skin. Chang advises gently patting skin until it’s damp, making sure to tap your neck, too. Those concerned about dripping can do the routine while bending over the sink. It only takes a couple of minutes to do so it doesn’t require a lot of effort.Another reason to do away with your towel is that patting your face dry can help boost your skin care regimen. According to Winard, a slightly damp face is the perfect canvas for beauty products because damp skin receives moisture better. For those who aren’t ready to ditch their towels, Winard suggests only patting your face dry with a soft, 100 percent cotton towel. Then try slowly using the towel less and see if it makes a difference in your complexion.

Beauty Tips for People With Fair Skin

Beauty Tips for People With Fair Skin

The trend toward tanned and sunkissed skin has certainly been promoted by the media in the last few decades, but this does not in any way diminish the natural beauty and radiance of a fairer complexion.
From Nicole Kidman and Julianne Moore to Emma Stone and Cate Blanchet, many of our most notable and celebrated actresses have embraced their lighter skin tone and reminded us that all skin types are beautiful and worthy of praise.
With so much of our makeup and beauty ideals targeted toward achieving a bronzed glow, it can be difficult to know how to make the most of your lighter features. In this article, we will explore some helpful ways to keep your skin radiant throughout the year.
Skincare Routine
A good skincare routine consists of cleansing, toning and moisturizing your skin each day.
Cleansing
Begin by washing your face with a gentle cleanser to remove impurities and unclog your pores. This will also help to reduce unwanted breakouts or acne, and any dullness to your complexion. The right facial wash should cleanse your skin without stripping it of essential oils or dry it out.
A good tip is to look for a  non-comedogenic cleanser, which means it will not block or clog up your pores. This is ideal if your skin is prone to breakouts or if you have combination skin.
Toning
Adding a toner to your skincare routine can protect your skin from the elements and help to close and tighten your pores after washing. It will also remove impurities from the day such as oil, dirt, and bacteria as well as any last traces of makeup. A good toner can help to hydrate and nourish your skin priming it for absorbing the ingredients in your moisturizer. When choosing a toner for your skin, look for some of the following ingredients:
Beta hydroxy acid (BHA)  or Alpha hydroxy acid (AHA): This will help to unclog your pores by gently removing dead skin cells, minimize the appearance of blackheads and prevent breakouts.Hyaluronic acid: helping to hydrate and moisturize your skin, this ingredient can prevent the onset of fine lines and wrinkles.Rose water: This ingredient can soothe your skin from irritation due to its anti-inflammatory properties.Vitamin C and E: Together, these antioxidants can protect your skin from sun damage and free radicals. Moisturizing
The purpose of a moisturizer is to hydrate your skin and provide it with the nourishment needed to remain soft, supple and plump. A good moisturizer does this by increasing the water content of your skin and reducing transepidermal water loss.
When selecting a moisturizer, an oil-free lightweight product that is gel-based can be a good place to start as it won’t overpower your skin and leave it feeling oily or clogged. One of the most important things to look for in a moisturizer is one with a ceramide base. Ceramides are fatty acids, or lipids which are naturally found in the outermost layer of your skin and help from the skin barrier. By moisturizing and replenishing this barrier, ceramides help your skin retain its moisture protecting it against water loss as well as harmful pollutants and extreme weather conditions.
Depending on where you live, you may find a thicker cream-based moisturizer is beneficial for your skin in the colder months, when it can be prone to drying out. Some of the ingredients to look for in a moisturizer include vitamin E, hyaluronic acid, glycerine and pro-vitamin B5.
Sun Protection
Sun protection is important for every skin type but none more than for pale or fair skin which is more sensitive to the sun and more likely to burn. UVA light comprises Ultraviolet A (UVA) and Ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation which are both harmful for the skin.Approximately 95% of UV rays that reach the earth are UVA rays which can lead to premature aging of the skin while the remaining 5% of UVB radiation can cause the skin to burn. Too much exposure to UV light can also contribute to cancer, so it is essential to protect your skin by wearing a sunscreen that offers protection against both types of UV radiation. This is known as broad spectrum protection.
Wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 is something you should do every day to prevent sun damage to your fair skin. You can apply this separately as a sunscreen or opt for a moisturizer that has SPF protection included. It’s important to do this even on days when it is not sunny as 80% of UV rays can still penetrate through cloud cover. Apply your sunscreen about 15 minutes before heading outside to give it enough time to activate.
In addition to sunscreen, it’s important for people with fair skin to take other sun protection measures. Where possible, opt for the shade and invest in a wide-brimmed sun hat to protect your hair, head and neck. Read more about protective hairstyles for white hair. Sunglasses are also a must to protect your eyes and delicate eye area from the sun and try to cover your delicate skin with loose fitted, long sleeves, long skirts or pants on days when the sun is at its strongest.
Eat Foods for Healthier Skin
Beauty begins from within and a healthy, radiant complexion will reflect your overall health and well-being. To support your beauty efforts it’s important to also take care of your diet and eat foods for healthy skin. A nutritious and balanced diet that is rich in vitamins, minerals and  antioxidants will help to boost your skincare regimen and enhance your complexion.
Foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids such as fish, nuts and seeds, as well as vitamin E found in leafy greens like spinach and kale are especially beneficial for your skin. Foods that contain high levels of antioxidants are also great for supporting your skin, and include foods such as blueberries, tomatoes and green tea. Taking a daily multivitamin is another great way of ensuring your skin is receiving the nutrients it needs to remain healthy and vibrant.
By following the guidance in this article, you can help support your skin and do wonders for your overall beauty and appearance.

Padma Lakshmi reveals her DIY beauty staples and the secret to a smudge-proof lip

Padma Lakshmi reveals her DIY beauty staples and the secret to a smudge-proof lip

“When I’m home, I make sure that half of my diet is fruits and vegetables,” says Padma Lakshmi. “I’m 51 and I think that’s why my skin now looks good because I’ve nourished it properly.” Along with her minimum intake of 2-3 liters of water per day and the regular consumption of yogurt Lassi for gut health, it’s clear Lakshmi has an inside-out approach to beauty. “People always ask me what I put on my skin and sometimes it’s not what you put on your skin topically,” she says, “it’s really what you put in your body.”Food is also the star of her topical regimen, thanks to a DIY honey mask. “It has anti-inflammatory properties; it’s a smoothing agent and exfoliant,” she says, massaging the mask onto dry skin and gently tapping: “The suction pulls out all the impurities.” Lakshmi harvested this elixir from her own beehive, which sits nestled on her New York City terrace. As a food expert, model, and TV host, Lakshmi has spent years on camera, and she’s honed her makeup routine accordingly. She starts with a Laura Mercier primer and two shades of Armani Beauty’s Luminous Silk foundation to veil hyperpigmentation and even skin tone. “When I’m going on camera, I make sure my face is extra even but when I’m not on camera I don’t really wear that much makeup,” she says. “I try to let my skin rest.”For added coverage, she blends concealer with her fingers on her under-eye area, as well as around her mouth, chin, and forehead. She etches her brows with a Dior pencil with the help of a Zadro compact mirror, before sweeping a peachy bronze shade atop her lids. Her eye look is complete with purple eyeshadow on her lower lash line—“I love purple on brown skin; I think it actually acts as a neutral”—a subtle blue-winged eyeliner (a shade by Urban Decay that she can’t live without), and a coat of mascara. When it comes to lip color, Lakshmi reaches for matte products that won’t budge throughout a day spent eating—this time reaching for a duo by Nars and Clinique. She highlights her cheeks and Cupid’s bow (a tip from pro makeup artist Pat McGrath), then adds a soft contour, and a spritz of Tata Harper’s hydrating essence. Her homemade perfume—a blend of essential oils like neroli, geranium, rosemary, and black pepper—provides the perfect finishing touch. This article first appeared on Vogue.comAlso read:10 pictures that will take you inside Padma Lakshmi’s wardrobePadma Lakshmi: “Motherhood kept my vanity in check”The secret to Padma Lakshmi’s amazing skin is her green juice recipe

Ask the Experts: How to Ban Puffy Eyes for Good

Ask the Experts: How to Ban Puffy Eyes for Good

Image: ImaxtreeLate nights and early mornings are associated with the daily grind. Then there is the unsexy aftereffect of tired, puffy eyes. Think lack of sleep is the only culprit? Think again. “With aging a piece of tissue located under the eyes called the septum becomes thin. Normal fat pads located beneath the septum can then herniate (break through) causing a bulge under the eyes,” explains consulting dermatologist for Clark’s Botanicals Dr. Donna Bilu Martin.Diet is clearly a key player in bags under eyes and excessive puffiness. Avoiding salty foods or checking the labels on processed foods will definitely save you grief later. If you overdo it with seasoning (or even alcohol), rehydrate with water before bed. Plus, let’s not forget the thin, delicate skin area can be damaged by sun exposure. Not to mention environmental toxins (like smoking), which lead to excess sagging and wrinkling.“Eye puffiness is the result of an excessive amount of fluid retention in the connective tissue surrounding the eyes,” explains dermatologist Dr. Patricia Wexler. “We most commonly deal with the weakened ligaments that hold the fat back and eventually let the fat fall forward and bulge. The bags under eyes become more prominent when circulation is stagnant while sleeping and become fluid overloaded.” Image: ImaxtreeObviously, the first reflex is to reach for an eye cream. Although finding products that actually stimulate collagen (the plumping factor) and incorporating a daily sunscreen are also key. Board-certified dermatologist and medical director of Dermstore.com Dr. Ashley Magovern is a fan of products that contain vitamin C (like tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate). Or ones with niacinamide (vitamin B3) and peptides.“As your undereye area gets stronger, if you can add in a product that contains a retinoid, that’s ideal,” adds Magovern. “Ceramides are one of the best ways to maintain your skin barrier and using a ceramide-dominant moisturizing product is great (can use all over your face, but include the eye area). This will help prevent any inflammation and irritation and allow you to be more successful in using the more active ingredients, which can sometimes cause some inflammation.”How much sleep you need varies from person to person. If you aren’t catching enough, your eyes can look dull, red and unavoidably puffy. “Healthy sleep habits can go a long way when it comes to both undereye puffiness and dark circles,” adds Magovern, “This will work better than any eye cream.” Try propping an extra pillow (or two) under your head. This prevents the liquid from storing up overnight causing fluid to drain downward. Image: Imaxtree“If you have dark undereye circles and/or are hollow, you can use light-reflecting makeup and highlighters underneath your eyes,” advises Dr. Jason B. Diamond, facial plastic surgeon. Use eye drops to help whiten your eyes. An all-power concealer helps disguise dark circles. In addition, color-correcting formulas can be custom blended to disguise imperfections. Final touches, like hints of highlights (on the brow bone) along with lush curled lashes, really make your eyes pop. Also, don’t underestimate at-home hacks. Like tried-and-true cucumber slices. Or caffeinated tea bags. “It is absolutely helpful to use [these] DIY remedies,” explains Wexler. “Both decrease fluid within the fat, green tea [bags] can also decrease inflammation.”Seeking a more permanent solution for how to get rid of bags under eyes? There are definitely things to consider. Make sure you choose a surgeon who is board certified and fellowship trained in the surgery that will be performed. “It can be confusing as there as some physicians performing cosmetic surgeries who may not have the same training and certifications as others,” explains Magovern. “It’s always a good idea to get a few consultations.”According to Diamond: “Different surgical procedures address each problem and it is important to have a thorough understanding of which problem one has so that the most appropriate and effective method can be performed. If not, the problems can worsen.”

Here’s how to store your makeup products correctly for summer to make them last longer

Let’s get straight to it—the summer heat is only fun if you’re on a beach with a mimosa in your hand. As we find ourselves in the hottest month of the year, it’s important to be mindful of how to store your makeup products. Makeup and skincare, when stacked in your bathroom or on shelves with direct exposure to sunlight, can easily develop mould and bacterial growth thanks to the high temperatures and humidity. We explain the most important factors you should consider when pondering the question–how to store your makeup products correctly. Where do you keep your makeup and skincare? The ‘store in a cool and dry place’ disclaimer that most products come with isn’t for nothing. It’s important to keep your makeup and skincare out of direct sunlight, most importantly. Sun exposure or high temperatures can impact the efficacy of your products by altering the formula — we’re talking splitting and oxidation, both of which reduce the shelf life of the product, hence, reducing the returns on your investment as well.Ensure that your makeup stays in drawers — not in your bathroom, please. The steam from hot showers can lead to mould and bacteria development within your palettes, sponges and brushes. Stash them out of sunlight as much as you can. If you’re using clear drawers to store your products, make sure they aren’t placed next to a window either; they’re great for organisation but still let UV rays in.How hygienically do you treat your makeup? As fun as getting ready with your sister, best friend or even your mom sounds, sharing the same products can lead to cross contamination, infecting your products and possibly causing acne and other infections as well. Plan a makeup date but keep your products and tools separate, always sanitising them before usage. If you’re after a makeup sanitiser that doesn’t alter the formula or impact its texture, look to Code Beauty by Bianca Louzado. Try the Anti-Bacterial Cosmetic Disinfectant for products in pots and pans, Sanitising Wipes for lipsticks and liners and the Brush & Sponge Cleansing Baths for your tools. In the summer, make sure you clean your brushes and sanitise your tools more often. Your skin is also stickier this time of the year and that quick concealer touch-up can easily transfer excess oil onto your brush, which lives there till the next wash.Storage solutionsChests of drawers are ideal to store both makeup and skincare. Easily available drawer organisers allow you to create partitions within, based one how much space you need for each product type you own, making it easier to store and use. For your potent serums and skin soothing products, it’s worth investing in a beauty fridge. The cool temperatures prevent your active ingredients from oxidising and making skin soothing and cooling gels and mists work even better. The House of Beauty Beauty Fridge comes with a mirror on the front with LED lights which doubles up as a mini vanity as well.As a thumb rule, make sure you keep your fingers out of all sorts of pots and jars, and use clean beauty spoons or spatulas to scoop everything out. The increased humidity increases the risk of infection tenfold and even when you’ve rinsed your hands, it’s safer to use a clean tool instead. Also Read:6 serums to try this summer for fading acne scarsInside the world of fragrance and silicone-free skincare with Biologique RechercheBest clean sunscreens to buy and the suncare ingredients to avoid
