Get Lilly Singh’s fresh and modern makeup look from Vogue India’s April 2022 cover
Lilly Singh is a woman of many words when it comes to writing her novels, but when it comes to beauty, she prefers a minimal and less is more approach as seen on Vogue India’s April cover. Since, minimal makeup is basking under its trending glory at the moment, makeup artist Holly Silius wanted to create her own rendition of it with an understated look accompanied by a statement lip to bring just a hint of drama. “We wanted to keep the look fresh and modern, so we can spotlight Lilly’s natural beauty fully,” says Silius on creating the multi-hyphenate millennial’s look. Silius shared that on the day of the shoot, “Lilly was very open and let me create whatever look I felt was best. She has great skin and striking features so it was easy to exude a more chic and natural feeling.” Ahead, Silius reveals her makeup and skincare hacks and tricks alongside Lilly Singh’s step-by-step beauty look breakdown. On breaking down the lookIt’s all in the prep. I cleansed the skin with Bakel water cleanser followed by Retrouvé face serum all over the face. I massaged it in with my hands and then used ReFa to roll away any tensions in the neck, jaw and face area. I love the ReFa!Then I applied Retrouvé eye serum and ADC moisturiser all over the face and NOTO Botanics Rooted Oil all over the body. The skin coverage was very light with Bobbi Brown foundation sticks blended lightly in small areas around the nose and chin accompanied with NARS under eye concealer. For the eyebrows, I used the amazing Hourglass Arch Brow Sculpting Pencil and topped off the lashes with a very light Hourglass Cosmetics Unlocked Instant Extensions Mascara application.I used the Tom Ford Shade and Illuminate contour palette for some light contour using the MAC fan brushes for a softer finish. I added another dab of NOTO Botanics Hydra Highlighter on her cheekbones. To add a little bit of extra dew on the eyelids I applied Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream Skin Protectant. Then for the lip I used Laura Mercier Lip Pencil in the shade Hazelnut Tea paired with the Alima Pure Bijou Cream Blush to create the deep shade.Lastly, I finished off with a light sweep of Hourglass Veil™ Translucent Setting Powder. On creating Singh’s deep pout The Alima Pure Blush colour can be used on the lips and eyes so I always like to mix them up a little. Depending on the lighting during a photoshoot they are my go to shades so I blended the shades Bijou and Crush for a flawless deep pout. On her beauty hack to create the perfect matte lip I actually use only lip liners on a dry lip for a matt finish but for this shoot I used the tissue hack. Take a facial tissue and split it so you only have one ply of it. Press the lips together and place the single ply tissue over the mouth and patt powder all over it. Then you can layer up the product to achieve an ideal density of colour. I love the shade Hazelnut Tea by Laura Mercier for a natural tone lip pencil with definition. Charlotte Tilbury also have a great selection of natural lip colours! On her trick to create the perfect spring/summer makeup lookKeep the skin hydrated and dewy, as much as possible. Apply minimal concealer on blemishes so that the skin texture remains visible. Use a highlighter on the cheeks and eyelids. To add a pop of colour and extra definition to the muted visage try gel liners for the eyes–I love Pat McGrath for the water line. Always let your natural features shine through but remember to accentuate some like, perfecting your eyebrows or light coats of mascara. Finally, layering is the best practice when it comes to blush–start with less and smudge out on eyes and cheeks.Read the full April 2022 cover story with Lilly Singh here. Also Read:8 times Lilly Singh served a strong power suit

Yes, that’s Lilly Singh on the cover of Vogue India’s April issue, and yes, that’s a powder pink Gucci pantsuit she’s wearing from the Gucci Love Parade collection. Singh, a product of the Youtube generation, with now over 14 million subscribers on the streaming channel, is a cultural commentator, author, comedian, late night show host, actress and rapper. You’d think that a suit, with its traditional implications of powerful shoulders, ‘80s-inflected nostalgia and uniform-like quality, is an unlikely closet companion for someone as multifaceted as this entertainer. The writer of Be a Triangle, her second book (out this month), and Bawse, a tome dedicated to the internet hustle culture, much like the longline of antecedent leading ladies before her, loves a great pantsuit moment that says anything-but-ordinary. What’s worthy to note is the inventiveness of her monochrome suits that although cavalier in their countenance model the multitudes of her identity and journey. Not so long ago, Singh broke the record for being the first queer (she came out as bisexual in 2019) woman of colour to host a late night show on a major network. She is also one of the earliest female comics to rise to the top through Youtube, to became a global South Asian icon. She is part of a posse of pop-culture personalities that are bookmarking the diaspora experience on mediums that speak to the larger world. Her quick-wit commentary of Indian aunties or playlists with nostalgic ear worms on loop, recreate common South Asian household moments in 10 second video vignettes. The classic suit, when moulded as per her signature Lilly Singh twist, becomes the powerful fashion tool it has always been. One that bends gender boundaries and claims fluid ground. Think feathers and sequins on a classic black number for the Pre-Oscars party hosted by fellow Indian actor Priyanka Chopra Jonas. Or entering uncharted territory with an orange suit open for dissent at the discretion of an Instagram jury. The best however, a Vogue India favourite, the Falguni Shane Peacock traditional Indian sherwani given a suit-like treatment by Singh on Diwali. Scroll through for all the times Lilly Singh redefine your smart-casual remit via an anything-but-ordinary power packed pantsuit.
How to Spice Up Your Diet Without Breaking It
Oftentimes, one of the most difficult things about sticking with a diet is staving off boredoms. Most diets designed to help you drop pounds or lose fat restrict processed, sugary foods and consist primarily of low-calorie foods that are rich in nutrients but aren’t always the most fun mealtime option. When you build a diet that you get tired of after a few days or weeks, you probably won’t stick with it for very long.
Making sure that you don’t get bored with the foods you eat every day is an essential part of developing a healthy, sustainable diet that doesn’t make you want to give up. You don’t have to choose between sticking with your diet and enjoying the foods you eat. Eating a healthy, balanced diet doesn’t have to bore you to tears. If you make an effort to keep your diet interesting and yummy, you’ll find that it’s much easier to stick with your healthy lifestyle long-term and make more progress toward your ultimate fitness goals.
1. Go Out More
Going out to eat more often is rarely a suggestion thrown at those who are trying to maintain a healthy diet. However, exploring healthy options at restaurants is a great way to put fun back into healthy eating. Check out places that are known for their healthy plates. Many restaurants have capitalized on the popularity of clean eating by adding flavorful meals that are low in calories, fat, and sugar to their menus.
Beware of giant restaurant portions. Most restaurants, even those that advertise healthy options, serve you way too much food on one plate. Always pay close attention to your body and stop eating when you start feeling full. If you have trouble listening to your body, divide your meal in half when it first arrives and set one half aside. After you eat half of your food, you’ll be forced to stop and reassess your hunger before reaching for the rest of your meal.
2. Use Substitutes
You can make diet-friendly versions of your favorite foods using healthier substitutes for standard ingredients. This way, you can still indulge in the meals you love to eat without completely breaking your diet.
Look into sugar substitutes if you’re missing homemade baked goods. Applesauce, maple syrup, honey, and coconut sugar can all be used in place of over-processed, refined white sugar in many recipes. When making substitutions in recipes, always do your research to figure out how much of the substitute you should add. Most ingredients and their substitutes are not perfectly interchangeable.
3. Get Into Meal Prep
There are tons of diet-friendly recipes out there that are exciting and filled with nutrients. Many of them just take a little more time and effort to prepare than a plain grilled chicken breast or a simple salad. Oftentimes, there just doesn’t seem to be enough time in the day to cook up meals that are more flavorful but more complex.
Meal prepping can help you keep your diet interesting without taking too much time out of your busy schedule. If you can carve out a couple of hours one day a week, you can prep a weeks’ worth of meals so you won’t have to choose between eating a boring lunch and being late to work. Separate the meals you prep into portions and store them in the fridge or freezer in individual containers. This way, you can easily take the food to work with you or just warm it up and eat it at home within minutes.
4. Keep Up With the Seasons
Nature provides you with a new variety of healthy, fresh fruits and vegetables on a seasonal basis. It’s hard to get bored of the fruits and veggies you can eat when different types become available every few months. Find a local farmer’s market near you and have fun exploring your produce choices there as they change with the seasons.
You can also freeze some of your favorite fruits or vegetables when they’re about to go out of season. Blend these frozen treats into a smoothie if you get bored of the produce selection in the market and find yourself longing for the fruits and veggies of seasons past.
5. Balance Wisely
Over-restrictive diets are almost never a good idea. Diets that don’t allow you to eat certain foods at all are not sustainable and get very boring very quickly. Focus on maintaining balance in your diet rather than cutting out food groups altogether.
When you’re feeling tired of eating the same bland, healthy foods over and over again, make a meal that includes a food you really love, like pasta or red meat. Keep your portion of not-so-healthy food small and supplement it with a larger amount of low-calorie, nutrient-rich sides like veggies or lentils. This way, you keep your meal interesting and delicious without sacrificing nutrition or gorging on empty calories.
6. Get Creative
There are many ways to make healthy diet staples more interesting and more fun to eat. Sources of lean protein like fish, lean meats like chicken, vegetables, and eggs all serve as healthy foundations which you can manipulate and add other ingredients to in order to make them less bland.
Try eating eggs every morning for a week, but cook them differently each day. Try out different spice blend recipes and sprinkle them over chicken or fish. Find or create natural salad dressing recipes low in sugar and calories and experiment with pairing them with a variety of salads and vegetables.
7. Look at Labels
You can find low-calorie, low-fat, and reduced sugar versions of many foods that are normally high in unhealthy ingredients. You can buy healthier versions of anything from cheese to bread to ice cream.
Beware of foods that are advertised as low-fat, low-calorie, or reduced sugar but also contain a bunch of unfamiliar chemicals. Steer clear of these artificial chemical-laden foods and opt for food products with more recognizable ingredients instead.
Healthy diets and boring food don’t have to be synonymous. With a little bit of creativity, you can devise a diet that’s both nutritious and delicious to keep yourself on track toward your health goals without getting bored or discouraged.
Is Playa del Carmen Safe for Solo Female Travelers?
This post was written by Emily Becker, a Mexico-based freelance writer for BMTM.
I get asked this question a lot. Whether it’s my friends who are planning to visit the Riviera Maya or my concerned family members, there seems to be general doubt about how safe it is to visit Playa del Carmen as a solo female traveler.
Before I get into the ins and outs of this topic, I want to preface it by saying that I have been to Playa del Carmen more times than I can count, and nothing horrendous has ever happened to me. I know that other travelers have not been so lucky, though.
There are many factors that go into staying safe in Playa, and I hope to share some tips while also debunking common misconceptions. After all, risks exist everywhere, and the more we learn and prepare ourselves, the better off we are.
Here is my take on traveling to Playa del Carmen safely as a solo female traveler:
What Not to Do in Playa del Carmen
DON’T go out to parties alone
There is a heavy clubbing scene in Playa del Carmen, which is probably why a lot of people choose it for their Mexican beach vacation. While it may look like all glitz and glamour from the outside, there is a seriously dark underbelly to the party scene in Playa. I’m not saying it’s inherently dangerous to partake in it, but definitely don’t venture to any of the big clubs or parties in Playa alone.
A great alternative to partying in Playa by yourself is taking a dance lesson in a group setting instead. I love to dance, and usually the only reason why I go to parties anyway is to dance the night away. If you’re like me, taking a dance lesson instead of going to a sweaty club is much more enjoyable — and safer!
DON’T get carried away with drinks
It’s common practice in Playa del Carmen that club promoters will find groups of ladies and offer them free bottle service, just to have more women in the club. While it might be enticing to take advantage of free drinks, just be aware that the motivation for this is to get more people in the club in general. (And if you do accept the free booze, remember that they will ask for a tip.)
Playa del Carmen is not the place to lose control, as it’s not a safe place in general to be walking around late at night, even if you have company. There are pickpockets waiting to take advantage of drunk tourists, so having a grasp on your five senses is the best way to avoid being robbed.
If you do drink, just remember to alternate cocktails with glasses of water. Stay hydrated, and check in with a friend every once in a while to make sure you haven’t crossed your own boundary.
DON’T partake in recreational drugs
There’s so much more to Playa del Carmen than partying!
The reality in Playa del Carmen is that there exists a great deal of cartel violence. However, if you don’t buy or use drugs, there’s no reason why you would be a victim. This problem probably wouldn’t exist if there weren’t a strong market for recreational drugs in Playa.
If you go out at night, you will likely have at least one person in the street, outside a bathroom, or in a bar offer drugs to you at some point. Just say no and walk away.
DON’T hail cabs late at night
Cab drivers in Playa have a bad reputation for harassing women, refusing to take patrons where they have asked to go, and even kidnapping in some cases. Of course this is not true for all cab drivers, but why risk it?
To avoid hailing a random cab at night, use WhatsApp Taxi instead. There’s no Uber in Playa del Carmen, so this is the safest option. All you have to do is send a quick message to the Whatsapp number, let them know where you are, and they’ll send a reliable driver to you.
DON’T use ATMs that aren’t in a bank
Throughout Playa del Carmen, you’ll see random ATMs along the street. These are not monitored, so using them can make you an easy target for theft. Only use ATMs that are attached to a bank where there are guards and/or cameras.
DON’T buy into scams
Especially on the main walking street, Quinta Avenida, there are plenty of people who may try to scam you. One popular one is that shop clerks will approach tourists, claiming to recognize them from their hotel. Then they will lure said tourist into their overpriced store and pressure them to buy something for an outrageous price. Just say “no, gracias” and move on.
Best Practices for Staying Safe in Playa del Carmen
I ventured to Cozumel via ferry alone, rented a motorbike, and found this incredible beach.
Go out in a group…
If you want to make friends and have a fun time out in Playa, consider staying at a hostel and going out in a group as opposed to going alone. Make sure that you have at least one person in the group that you trust. I always try to find a buddy who is down to leave the party when I’m ready to go home.
…or just stay in
There’s nothing wrong with visiting Playa del Carmen and staying in at night. Treat yourself to a nice meal, have a stroll down Quinta Avenida, and head back to your place for a quiet evening away from the crazy party scene. My favorite nights in Playa have been spent reading in a hammock poolside, if I’m being totally honest.
Lock your valuables in a safe place
Don’t bring your valuables out with you. Whether you’re headed to the beach for the day or to dinner in the evening, do not bring all the cash you have with you. There are many pickpockets roaming the streets and beaches of Playa del Carmen, waiting for the opportunity to snatch your cash and/or valuables.
Share your location with a friend
Find a trustworthy friend at home who you can share your location with while you’re traveling. That way, if you’re in trouble, at least there is somebody who knows where you are and can check in with you. This is a great way to maintain some peace of mind when traveling solo in Playa del Carmen, because you know that there’s at least one person who has your back.
Rent a car through a reputable company
If you decide to rent a car in Mexico, make sure it’s only through a reputable company. There are scams on the Riviera Maya in which sketchy companies try to get customers to pay for damages that they didn’t inflict on the vehicle. I recommend using Discover Cars for international rentals because you can see customer reviews and compare prices easily.
Dress down
Wearing designer clothing and flashy jewelry may make you a target for theft in Playa del Carmen, just like other places in Mexico and around the world. Being a beach town anyway, people dress pretty casual in Playa, so wear clothes that are comfortable to you and leave your expensive accessories at home.
Stick to the main streets
If you don’t have a strong grasp on how to get around Playa del Carmen, there’s nothing wrong with staying in the main tourist areas. After all, most of Playa outside of the beachside downtown area is pretty residential, and everything you could want or need is within just a few blocks. If you already know where you’re going, go for it. But wandering around the streets of Playa aimlessly isn’t a great idea — plus there really isn’t much to see.
Have an open mind
Too often people think that the only thing to do in Playa del Carmen is go out to the bars at night. That couldn’t be further from the truth! In Playa there are some neat places to check out, like Playa Esmeralda, which has a huge cenote that opens up to the ocean. Plan your days with activities that you are excited about, and you won’t feel like you’re missing out on the nightlife scene.
